DESCRIPTION:Since completing his studies with Adam Holzman at the University of Texas at Austin’s Butler School of Music in 2017 with a Master of Music Performance degree\, Travis Johnson has returned to Portland to begin a concert career and teaching privately. The month of April is a busy performance month for Travis who is touring the great NW. \nTravis began his studies at eight years old with Peter Zisa\, whom he stayed with for seven years. In 2005\, Travis won the GFA Guitar Competition (Junior Division). In 2006 that Travis made the premier recording of a new commissioned piece by Bryan Johanson\, as well as music by F. Tarrega\, F. M. Torroba\, and Vivaldi’s Guitar Concerto in D Major. In 2007\, he performed at Carnegie Hall on nationally syndicated program From the Top\, and became a Davidson Scholar. \nAfter these fundamental studies\, Travis studied with Michael Partington\, whom he stayed with until he was accepted into the San Francisco Conservatory of Music\, where Travis worked under the tutelage of David Tanenbaum. Travis has enjoyed lessons and Master Classes from Jeremy Jouve\, Marcin Dylla\, Judicael Perroy\, David Russell\, Oscar Ghiglia\, and Raphael Smits. \n\n\n\n  \nPortland Guitar Society members receive a $5 discount on ticket price.

In fact\, Windham Hill piano icon George Winston used to open for Scott in concert in the early years. Scott’s music has a warm mellow vibe that will be enjoyed by Windham Hill fans as well as a wider audience. Whether it is jazz\, new age\, or whatever\, Scott humorously refers to his music as “Heavy Mental” or “Cosmic National Geographic.”

The recipient of numerous top prizes\, Adam Levin has been recognized by Associación Cultural Trujamán\, the Society \nA native of Chicago’s North Shore\, Levin holds BM and BA degrees from Northwestern University in Music Performance\, Psychology\, and Pre-Med. Under the tutelage of Eliot Fisk\, Levin completed a MM at New England Conservatory in Boston. His esteemed teachers have included Oscar Ghiglia\, Gabriel Estarellas\, Anne Waller\, Mark Maxwell\, and Paul Henry. DESCRIPTION:Shohei Toyoda\nAcclaimed finger-style guitarist Shohei Toyoda was born in Japan and raised in Dublin\, Ohio. Shohei always knew he had a special connection to music throughout his life. He received his musical education at Berklee College of Music\, and has studied with many prestigious musicians\, such as John Mcgann\, Walter Beasley\, Bob Pilkington and Guy Van Duser. \n2011 The Grand Champion of the “Home of the Legends” International Thumb-Picking Contest in Mulenburg\, Kentucky\n2012 First Prize and Best Arrangement Award at Japan’s National Finger- Picking Guitar Contest \n \nDoug Smith\nGrammy-Award Winning Guitarist Doug Smith  has been called a cross between Chet Atkins\, Leo Kottke and Michael Hedges. In 2005\, Doug won a Grammy award for his participation on the Henry Mancini tribute CD Pink Guitar\, in 2006 he won the prestigious Winfield International Fingerstyle Guitar Competition\, and in 2007 he was one of the guitarists who contributed to the popular movie August Rush. \nSince then he has taught at guitar workshops throughout the country\, toured Japan\, Taiwan\, South Korea and China\, and shared the stage with guitar luminaries such as Andy McKee\, Tommy Emmanuel and Laurence Juber. DESCRIPTION:CELSO MACHADO: Virtuoso Brazilian Guitarist\, Percussionist\, Vocalist\, Multi-instrumentalist\, and Composer. \n“Amazing skills\, skills that combine elements that in the U.S. are rarely found in the same band\, let alone the same musician.”… TIM BROOKS\, Review of New York Guitar Festivals Brazilian Guitar Marathon  \nABOUT CELSO: Performer\, Composer\, Recording Artist\, and Teacher \nVirtuoso Brazilian guitarist\, percussionist\, multi-instrumentalist and composer\, Celso Machado\, transports his audiences through the richness and diversity of Brazilian music and beyond. For forty years Celso Machado has been performing on concert stages throughout Brazil\, Western Europe\, Scandinavia\, Canada\, and the United States. Considered one of the most versatile and exciting musician/composers of Brazilian music today; his guitar technique is but one of his passions; his gift for making music out of anything and everything around us is his mission in life. \nIn addition to Celso’s solo career he has shared the stages with some of the world’s great guitarists: Sergio and Odair Assad\, Badi Assad\, Romero Lubambo\, Yamandu Costa\, Cristina Azuma\, Peter Finger\, and Solorazaf.  He has opened for Gilberto Gil\, Bebel Gilberto\, Hermeto Pascaul\, and  Al di Meola; amongst other great musicians. \nBrazilian music has arisen out of various blends of Classical European\, African\, Portuguese and Indigenous influences. There is less division in Brazilian music between classical and jazz\, jazz and folk.  While Celso’s music is rooted in Brazilian rhythmic and melodic styles\, it also reflects his incurable fascination with other world music traditions. He finds similarities between the music of southern Italy and northeast Brazil\, the Egyptian Maqsoum and the Brazilian Baião  rhythm\, the Moroccan Gnawa rhythm  and Afoxé and Samba. Celso incorporates these influences into his own sound; his own unique contribution to the ongoing evolution of Brazilian music. \nDrawing on his thorough study of classical guitar\, Celso composes for guitar and ensemble.  His remarkably innovative compositions are infused with a rich knowledge of the traditional music of Brazil: samba\, chôro\, baião\, frêvo etc.  His compositions are published by Editions Henry Lemoine in Paris and are performed and recorded by both students and professionals around the World\, from solo performances to guitar orchestras.  Many of his scores have been adapted for other instruments: piano\, violin\, cello\, clarinet\, pan pipes\, harp etc.
