Zisa will open the festival performances Friday evening in Needham Hall. In addition to performing notable solo-classical-guitar pieces\, Zisa will perform three major chamber works with virtuoso flutist Cindy Ellis: Mozart’s Flute Quartet K.285\, Maximo Diego Pujol’s Suite Buenos Aires\, and Gary Schocker’s modern work Travel Dreams. Dr. Zisa will also be present a workshop for high-school teachers of guitar Friday afternoon\, as well as adjudicate the Saturday guitar performance event\, and conduct a Saturday masterclass.

It is also an opportunity to support charitable organizations that benefit our community. \nDance & the Season of Lights! For the first time SOL celebration will include dance. From the West (Spain) and the East (Thailand)! \nFlamenco guitarist Brenna McDonald began her studies with Martita Santiago (baile) and Jaime Woods (guitar) in Eugene\, Oregon. Since then she has devoted her life to the study of flamenco\, moving to Spain in 2003-2004 to study with Chiqui de Jerez and Jose Luis Balao and in 2008-2009 to study under Juan and Saray de los Reyes. Brenna started performing in 2004 with Solo Flamenco while pursuing her B.A. in Cultural Anthropology from Reed College (’06). Brenna has performed and collaborated with Flamenco Callejero\, El Cuadro Gallo\, Madjaleo\, Assa Flamenco\, Tablao de Rosas. Brenna is a founding member of La Peña Flamenca de Portland and Espacio Flamenco where teaches flamenco dance and guitar and co-organizes the performance company Espacio Flamenco Company.  \nEspacio Flamenco Company is a professional performance group based out of Espacio Flamenco’s studio that produces a variety of shows around Portland where new audiences can be exposed to flamenco. \nThai Dancers from the Thai Society Association of Oregon – is a non-profit organization dedicated to the celebration of Thai Culture through education\, public service and cultural performances. Since its inception in 1996\, the organization has been best known for its signature performances of Thai classical dance at various charity events\, retirement centers and festivals. Your benefaction will ensure the continuation of this mission. \nIlene Safyan\, recognized by Entertainment Weekly and the American Library Association\, is West Coast’s most celebrated Jewish musical artists. Ilene weaves the multicultural musical strands of the Jewish experience into a rich\, harmonic tapestry of sound.  She is also cantorial soloist at Neveh Shalom and Havurah Shalom. Ilene will be joined by Ed Kraus (clarinet)\, Steve Cohen (bass)\, and Andrew Ehrlich (violin).  \nXXDigitusDuo (“Twenty Fingers Dancing” Duo)\, named in Artslandia as one of Portland’s favorite arts\, is a “dynamic\, impressive\, and intrepid” piano duo. Recipient of 2016 RAC ~ XX Digitus Duo. Friends and colleagues since college years at New England Conservatory\, pianists Momoko Muramatsu and Maria Garcia have enjoyed individual careers that have taken them to over a dozen countries\, performing in a variety of formats at the Aspen\, Tanglewood\, Casals and Bergen festivals and with groups such as the Mark Morris Dance Company amongst many others. Based in Portland since 2014 they joined forces to perform the piano duo repertoire. In addition to presenting major works for four-hand and two pianos\, they explore the vast repertoire of their shared Latin American musical heritage. Very animated performers\, and their dramatic body language and facial expressions are an entertaining part of their performance. Their visible friendship chemistry and enthusiasm for music are contagious and uplifting. \nThousand Waves\, an “electric and exciting blend of musical styles from different continents” (Art Beat\, 2011)\, is a world-music ensemble founded by Peter Zisa a decade ago which blends the sounds of the Japanese Koto with the guitar\, flute\, violin\, and percussion.  With its program theme “West Meets East\,” it has featured Yukiko Yamaguchi on koto and LeeAnn McKenna on flute. \nSelected Reviews from SOL 2016 \n\n\n“Thank you so much for choosing the Alzheimer’s Association as the beneficiary of your Seasons of Light concert. The recipient of numerous top prizes\, Adam Levin has been recognized by Associación Cultural Trujamán\, the Society \nA native of Chicago’s North Shore\, Levin holds BM and BA degrees from Northwestern University in Music Performance\, Psychology\, and Pre-Med. Under the tutelage of Eliot Fisk\, Levin completed a MM at New England Conservatory in Boston. His esteemed teachers have included Oscar Ghiglia\, Gabriel Estarellas\, Anne Waller\, Mark Maxwell\, and Paul Henry. DESCRIPTION:Shohei Toyoda\nAcclaimed finger-style guitarist Shohei Toyoda was born in Japan and raised in Dublin\, Ohio. Shohei always knew he had a special connection to music throughout his life. He received his musical education at Berklee College of Music\, and has studied with many prestigious musicians\, such as John Mcgann\, Walter Beasley\, Bob Pilkington and Guy Van Duser. \n2011 The Grand Champion of the “Home of the Legends” International Thumb-Picking Contest in Mulenburg\, Kentucky\n2012 First Prize and Best Arrangement Award at Japan’s National Finger- Picking Guitar Contest \n \nDoug Smith\nGrammy-Award Winning Guitarist Doug Smith  has been called a cross between Chet Atkins\, Leo Kottke and Michael Hedges. In 2005\, Doug won a Grammy award for his participation on the Henry Mancini tribute CD Pink Guitar\, in 2006 he won the prestigious Winfield International Fingerstyle Guitar Competition\, and in 2007 he was one of the guitarists who contributed to the popular movie August Rush. \nSince then he has taught at guitar workshops throughout the country\, toured Japan\, Taiwan\, South Korea and China\, and shared the stage with guitar luminaries such as Andy McKee\, Tommy Emmanuel and Laurence Juber. His compositions have been heard on NPR\, Turner Classic Movies and Good Morning America among other places.

DESCRIPTION:CELSO MACHADO: Virtuoso Brazilian Guitarist\, Percussionist\, Vocalist\, Multi-instrumentalist\, and Composer. \n“Amazing skills\, skills that combine elements that in the U.S. are rarely found in the same band\, let alone the same musician.”… TIM BROOKS\, Review of New York Guitar Festivals Brazilian Guitar Marathon  \nABOUT CELSO: Performer\, Composer\, Recording Artist\, and Teacher \nVirtuoso Brazilian guitarist\, percussionist\, multi-instrumentalist and composer\, Celso Machado\, transports his audiences through the richness and diversity of Brazilian music and beyond. For forty years Celso Machado has been performing on concert stages throughout Brazil\, Western Europe\, Scandinavia\, Canada\, and the United States. Considered one of the most versatile and exciting musician/composers of Brazilian music today; his guitar technique is but one of his passions; his gift for making music out of anything and everything around us is his mission in life. \nIn addition to Celso’s solo career he has shared the stages with some of the world’s great guitarists: Sergio and Odair Assad\, Badi Assad\, Romero Lubambo\, Yamandu Costa\, Cristina Azuma\, Peter Finger\, and Solorazaf.  He has opened for Gilberto Gil\, Bebel Gilberto\, Hermeto Pascaul\, and  Al di Meola; amongst other great musicians. \nBrazilian music has arisen out of various blends of Classical European\, African\, Portuguese and Indigenous influences. There is less division in Brazilian music between classical and jazz\, jazz and folk.  While Celso’s music is rooted in Brazilian rhythmic and melodic styles\, it also reflects his incurable fascination with other world music traditions. He finds similarities between the music of southern Italy and northeast Brazil\, the Egyptian Maqsoum and the Brazilian Baião  rhythm\, the Moroccan Gnawa rhythm  and Afoxé and Samba. Celso incorporates these influences into his own sound; his own unique contribution to the ongoing evolution of Brazilian music. \nDrawing on his thorough study of classical guitar\, Celso composes for guitar and ensemble.  His remarkably innovative compositions are infused with a rich knowledge of the traditional music of Brazil: samba\, chôro\, baião\, frêvo etc.  His compositions are published by Editions Henry Lemoine in Paris and are performed and recorded by both students and professionals around the World\, from solo performances to guitar orchestras.  Many of his scores have been adapted for other instruments: piano\, violin\, cello\, clarinet\, pan pipes\, harp etc.
