The group is thrilled to be returning to the CDZ concert series \nChoro da Alegria draws much inspiration from the genre choro\, which means cry or lament and has been loosely called “Brazilian ragtime.” Choro features samba rhythms\, jazzy chords and fast tempos. Beyond choro the group enjoys performing classics tunes from Bossa Nova and MPB. Choro da Alegria is Pam Beaty on 7 string guitar\, Tom Pinit on bandolim\, and Esteban Diaz on percussion. The group released its first CD\, “quiosque\,” in 2015. \nThe concert will also feature special guest flutist Gabriela Gimenes from São Paulo\, Brazil. Pam Beaty and Peter Zisa will also perform set of Brazilian guitar duets.

An annual benefit concert since 2006\, SOL returns this year with an exciting program of music that celebrates the many cultural and faith traditions of the Portland community. \n  \nThis year’s Season of Lights Holiday Program will feature music from Morocco\, Spain\, Poland\, Russia\, Japan\, Italy\, India\, Ghana (Africa) and the Americas. Among the artists performing are legendary Jazz Hall of Fame vocalist Shirley Nanette; award-winning international group Seffarine\, (guitar and oud\, Nat Hulskamp\,  vocalist\, Lamaie Naki; percussion\, Mimy Fikira); Cantor Eyal Bitton (congregation Neveh Shalom)\, violinists Andrew Ehrlich\, Majestic Duo: Tatiana Kolchanova and Mary Rowell\,  Thousand Waves (Yukiko Yamaguchi\, Japanese koto; LeeAnn McKenna\, flute\, percussion\, Mimy Fikira)\, Carnatic Indian dancer Klinton Halliday (Carnatic Indian dancer)\, and guitarist Peter Joseph Zisa. \nDonations benefits Music Education for Children and Adolescents (non-profit: CDZ Collegium Musica). “The Seasons of Light made my holiday celebration!” – D.L. \n  \n“Seasons of Light was the most inspiring holiday concert I have attended in many years – and also\, the most fun!” – M.S \nSOL is also an opportunity to support charitable organizations that benefit our community. This year\, the CDZ Collegium Musica is the represented charity. CDZ Collegium’s mission is Giving Voice to Our Youth through Music: Expression\, Connection\, and Creativity. Musiking (doing music: from playing an instrument to composing) is vital part of our children’s emotional\, intellectual\, and spiritual human development. For disadvantaged at-risk children and youth\, musiking represents empowerment through creative expression. \n
